Cosmetic Surgery Is a Big Deal

The most important thing you can do is to choose the right surgeon for your needs. Before you have any cosmetic surgery done, do your homework. Follow these simple steps prior to having any cosmetic surgery done.

  1. Research the cosmetic procedures you’re interested in. Learn the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
  2. Begin to understand the limitations and possibilities of cosmetic procedures.
  3. Learn about the benefits of the cosmetic surgery as well as the potential risks involved.
  4. Interview more than one plastic surgeon and make sure to ask the right questions.
  5. Talk to others who have had cosmetic surgery, particularly those who have had the same cosmetic procedure you would like.
  6. Choose the right plastic surgeon for your particular cosmetic procedure.

Read the following to learn more about Plastic Surgery and Dr. Michael Freedland, M.D.

Cosmetic Vs. Reconstructive

Cosmetic surgery is intended to improve a person's appearance by restoration of damaged areas of skin, removal of wrinkles or blemishes, etc. This is an elective procedure usually not covered by insurance. Reconstructive surgery is the restoration of appearance and function following injury or disease, or the correction of congenital defects, using the techniques of plastic surgery. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies although coverage for specific reconstructive procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly.

Activities Compatible With Surgery

Most activities should be avoided after surgery.  The procedure and your individual recovery process will most likely dictate your activity level.

Ask Questions

Ask your physician about the benefits and risks of your surgery; discuss your expectations and understand side effects and recovery time.

Consult with your plastic surgeon and discuss your full medical history to determine the most appropriate treatment. Ask if you are a good candidate for the procedure, what risks are involved, what must be done to achieve maximum results, the recovery process, etc.

Here are some questions to ask when selecting a physician.

  1. Are you an ASPS Member Surgeon?
  2. Are you board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
  3. Do you have hospital privileges to perform this procedure? If so, at which hospitals?
  4. Is the surgical facility accredited?
  5. How many procedures of this type have you performed?
